If you’ve been to a bike race in Southern California, you’ve seen a brawny bald guy bounding around the course like a friendly Labrador retriever. When riders rush past, the bald guy barks out “Gootch! Gootch! Goooooootch!”

“Gootch” is 18-year-old Iggy Silva III, and the hyperactively friendly man is his 49-year-old dad, Iggy Silva Jr. The two Iggys are fixtures in the Southern California bike-racing scene. And in his first year racing with the pros, young Iggy is landing significant results.

Silva, who rides for Rock Racing, won February’s prestigious 120-mile Merco pro road race in Merced. A few weeks later, riding against the best domestic teams in America, Silva took a third and a seventh in individual stages and won the best young rider’s jersey at the San Dimas pro stage race.

Winning the Merco road race is no small feat for a seasoned pro, let alone a first-year teenager. Past winners of the Central Valley race include Tour de France veterans Baden Cooke, Chris Horner and Juan Jose Haedo.

Track coach Tony Olsen taught Iggy how to ride at the San Diego velodrome. Olsen recounts that his dad brought Iggy to the velodrome when he was 7. “He was younger than we normally allow, but his dad said he would be there for all the classes. At first his talent did not stand out. He always showed a lot of enthusiasm and put in great efforts. You could tell he really enjoyed riding and racing. His dad always encouraged him to give his best and Little Iggy never gave less than 100 percent. It wasn’t until Little Iggy was about 12 or 13 that he really started to show his potential. By the time he was 15 he was a national-caliber rider in his age group.”

When Iggy became a 17- to 18-year-old age group rider, he stepped up to the international competition – earning an invite to the World Junior Track Championships last year in South Africa. He has also raced in three-day track races in Belgium and on the road in Italy, Canada and Mexico.

Now that the San Diego High School graduate has left the junior ranks, his decade of racing experience and his calm demeanor serve him well. While Big Iggy is a loose fire hose of energy, his son is quiet, calm and unruffled. “We are so opposite,” dad Iggy explains. “Two opposites make a coin. I think the only thing we have in common is that we don’t quit and when you tell us we can’t do something we are going to prove you wrong.”

Over the last 10 years, Iggy has been coached by legendary cycling coach Eddie Borysewicz, and last year coach Mark Whitehead started working with him too. Whitehead, who raced on the 1984 U.S. Olympic cycling team and won over 200 races in his career, coaches Iggy at the velodrome twice a week. Outside of that, the young rider, who now rooms with other cyclists in a house near La Jolla, trains three to four hours daily on the road.

When asked what has kept Iggy racing for 10 years, Whitehead explains: “He’s got a passion for it, otherwise he wouldn’t be doing it.” Whitehead says it’s unusual for young cyclists to stick to their sport. “Its very rare that they last because the world just pulls you away. Cycling takes a lot of dedication and time. You have to be dedicated or you just aren’t going to win. That’s all there is to it.”

Last year at the world junior championships in Cape Town, Iggy raced with U.S. teammate Taylor Phinney, son of gold-medal-winning cycling parents, Davis Phinney and Connie Carpenter. Comparing Phinney with Silva, Whitehead says that thanks to his genes and his family cycling connections, Phinney is “A 100-percent phenom. In the realm that Michael Phelps is in his sport, Phinney is in cycling. There is no comparison.”

Whitehead also points out that there is no comparison between Phinney’s connected bike racing family and Iggy’s humble roots. While Phinney was born into a cycling family with all the attendant equipment and financial perks, Silva grew up in a poor single-parent household. That means scraping by for equipment, entry fees and gas money. When it comes to connections, money and industry support, Whitehead says Phinney “is on easy street” compared to Silva.

Whitehead, says Iggy, has racing skills beyond his age. “He’s got a lot of experience. He’s raced a lot of national champion junior events. He’s raced on the track with the elite level track cyclists in the United States 50-60 times. He’s got the experience of a 25 year old at 18.” Randall Coxworth agrees with this assessment. A racing cyclist for 25 years, Coxworth has watched Iggy race for five years and now races with him in the elite cycling ranks. He says that Iggy isn’t one to shy from suffering, either. “He’s never afraid to ride at the front. He has no problem doing the work. To think that this kid is only 18 years old when he has the maturity level of a 28 year old – to me, that’s impressive.”

Young Iggy has big dreams for the future. “I’d like to race professionally in Europe. My big race goal would be to do Paris-Roubaix.” What’s the appeal of the infamous Hell of the North? “The intensity of it. It’s a long hard sufferfest. Cobblestones. It’s the epitome of cycling.”

USA Cycling extended Iggy an invite to race in Belgium in April. “I’ve gone twice as a junior. They want me to come back. This will be my first year as a U23. It will be a period where I will show if I can go good in the U23 ranks as well. I’m going for six weeks. I start out with little races and depending on how I do, go to bigger races. It’s more of a trial run for years to come.”

Iggy relishes racing in Europe. “I loved it. It’s awesome. Even the junior races, like 100K kermesses. It’s just all out, the whole time. It’s good racing, like pro racing over here. Everyone is just going out and going hard and trying to win instead of sitting around and doing nothing.”

Can the teenager make it to the Pro Tour European level? Whitehead says he’s got a chance. “It’s not rocket science, man. If you do the work and you have the talent and are dedicated, the door is opening and you have opportunities. If you don’t do the work you are just pack filler.”

Allen Ritchburg has been Iggy’s doctor for the cyclist’s entire cycling career. Ritchburg, a long-time racing cyclist himself, cautions against expecting too much of the 18 year old too soon. “He’s got a ways to go and he’s just got to stay level headed.” The doctor recounts that it took Astana pro Chris Horner a good decade to become a top European pro after his initial successes in the early 1990s. “He went through a lot of struggles. You try and fail. You try and fail. You try and fail. It took him years.”

What Iggy and his father don’t have in money, the father makes up for in attention. Richburg explains. “His father makes sure that he holds a straight line and doesn’t sway from his goals. He really looks out for him. He’s a very positive influence on his life. I get a lot of fathers who come in and want me to give their kids growth hormones to get them better. Iggy Sr. is just really focused on being healthy and keeping him mentally tough and trying to build him from the ground up.”

Richburg also notes that Big Iggy has sacrificed for his son. “He’s out there most every night on the track and he gives very positive support. Not all people can say their father has been behind them all their years. It’s something very refreshing and unique.” Tony Olsen recounts an episode from a criterium that shows how much attention Big Iggy pays to the details in his son’s life. “I remember hearing someone comment that Little Iggy’s middle name must be “Drink Up, Son” because we all heard Big Iggy yelling that every lap for 45 minutes.”

Randall Coxworth underscores the fact that while Iggy and son are very different people, the father has had a strong influence in making his son a decent human being. “His dad is the kind of guy who walks around the race, and says hello to everyone, and calls everyone by their first name, and tells everybody good luck, and is there to help anybody. People kind of say he’s like the Little League dad, but his father is a true sportsman, and I think that’s where Iggy gets it from.”

So where did the nickname come from? “When he was a baby I used to tickle him and say ‘Gootchie, gootchie, gootchie,’” Dad Iggy explains. “Now it’s just Gootch.” Does Dad’s effusive support ever bother Iggy?

“Yeah, sometimes. I tell him to stop, but he doesn’t listen.”

This year's San Diego Supercross was on Saturday Feb 14th at Qualcomstadium. The night before Red Bull Energy Drink held a special event at Seau's Restaurant in Mission Valley to highlight their affiliation with theHonda Racing Team. The night featured an exciting raffle that included San Diego Supercross ticket packages, an autographed athlete jersey from amember of the Red Bull Honda Racing Team, and other motorcross items. Entertainment for the night included DJ Advice, the Red Bull Wings Team and Red Bull drink specials. Honorary guests included members of the Red Bull Honda Racing Team, Davi Milsaps, Andrew Short and 4 time national cycling champion and member of the Jr World US 2008 Team, Iggy Silva III. RedBull was thankful for the participation of Red Bull Honda Team members and Iggy Silva III. Their presence gave the night not only credibility but asense of excitement.

Iggy rode a great race. He did his job as a team player. Rock was very pleased with his performance that we just got word that he will be doing Redlands. How cool is that? This is perfect because right after that, in April, the 14th to be exact he will be leaving to Europe to ride for the U.S. National U-23 team. He will be gone for 6 weeks. We will wish him good luck.

Vitoria Rocks Vuelta Mexico With Solo Win

Cuernavaca, Mexico – The wins just keep coming for Rock Racing, with David Vitoria being the latest rider to throw a double-armed salute in the air for the team whose uniforms feature the words “Rock’s Not Dead.”

The fourth-year Swiss pro soloed to victory in Wednesday’s fourth stage of the Vuelta Mexico Telmex. His win in the 124-mile (200 km) race from Tlaxcala to Cuernavaca marked the team’s eighth win of the year and its third in the past five days.

On Saturday, Rahsaan Bahati led a 1-2 finish by Rock Racing at the Merco Classic Downtown Criterium, followed by Iggy Silva’s win at the Merco Classic Foothills Road Race on Sunday.

In Wednesday’s race, Vitoria escaped from three others – Arquimedes Lam (Tecos De La Uga), Francesco Rivera (Amica Chips-Knauf) and Andrew Pinfold (OUCH Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis) – on a steep climb in the closing miles to beat Lam by 20 seconds. Pinfold was third, 1:53 behind.

Gilberto Simoni (Serramenti Pvc Diquigiovanni-Androni Giocattoli) retained the overall lead by finishing in the peloton, 2:49 behind Vitoria. Rock Racing’s Enrique Gutierrez placed seventh on the day and is fifth in the overall standings, 10 seconds behind. Rock Racing’s Glen Chadwick, the race’s defending champion, is seventh overall, 13 seconds back.

At 133 miles (215 km), Thursday’s fifth stage is the longest of the eight-day race and features no fewer than eight King of the Mountain hot spots before ending in Toluca.

Iggy Silva benefited from the experience of Rock Racing captain Freddy Rodriguez, who guided the young rider to his first bunch sprint victory as a professional. The young track specialist defied the odds and not only completed the lengthy road race but used his points race smarts to manoeuvre a win ahead of Taylor Tolleson (BMC) and Andy Jacques-Maynes (Bissell).

"This is my first season as a category one rider and my first win at this level too," Silva told Cyclingnews with an ear-to-ear grin, pleased to be a part of Rock Racing's weekend-winning performances. His team-mates Rashaan Bahati and Justin Williams placed first and second in the previous day's criterium. "This is definitely the biggest win for me. It was pretty cool because all the big teams were here and I got to show my stuff."

The 192km Foothills Road Race might have been a typical distance for most of the professional men's peloton but for 18-year-old Silva it was 150 kilometres longer than the standard junior level 40-kilometre points race that he has been accustomed to competing in.

"I haven't ever done a race this long so I was trying to pace myself towards the end, hoping I was able to make it," said Silva. "It was definitely on for most of the race, with a lot of attacking. Plus there were a lot a faster sprinters here and riders who have already done some big races."

The speed of the peloton picked up near the end of the race to reel in a seven-man breakaway. The only obstacle preventing a straight and easy shot to the finish line was a small hill placed in the last kilometre. It may have been unassuming but it was enough to disorganise team lead outs and force every man to fight for himself.

"At the finish, Freddy [Rodriguez] went and I stayed and sat third wheel," Silva continued. "The BMC guy [Taylor Tolleson] went and I sat on him and countered when he caught up to Freddy. There was no one behind me so it was all good. It was perfect to have Freddy there because that forced another team to jump and I was in the perfect position to counter."

The peloton set off in the early morning to complete five laps of a nearly 40km circuit through the notorious orange and almond groves of California's Central Valley. Cooler temperatures and little rain were optimal in keeping the pollinating bees in their bee-hives and not in the riders jerseys and helmets.

Team Bissell rode offensively and forced several of the day's significant breakaways. Each lap a large leading group reshuffled with some riders dropping off the back and others bridging the small margin across. Along with Bissell other teams included in the splits were BMC, Colavita-Sutter Home, California Giant Berry Farms and La Grange.

"There were a lot of early breakaways but the group seemed to be glued together the whole race," said Tolleson. "A break would go but nothing ever got more than a minute before a big chase would start. I don't think there was one group that went that everyone was happy with and not enough big teams to control it. It was on the gas pretty much all day.

Strength from the chasing peloton came from local level teams that included Bike Religion, Webcor, Lombardi Sports and the Z-team that kept the time margin between the field and any front group from gaining more than a minute-and-a-half.

"We were all over the front and off the front," Jacques-Maynes said. "We wanted to be hyper-aggressive because we we aren't a great field sprinting team. All of the bigger teams would populate the break and then solo operators or smaller teams with less riders would just sell out to bridge the gap. There were just different tactics going on. But those teams ended up using up a lot of their guys because as the race went on the field was getting smaller and smaller."

Merco Merced Classic race report:

Iggy chased and led out the big boys again for the win. Rahsaahn Bahatti 1st place, Justin Williams 2nd, and Little Iggy 12th in the criterium. Unfortunately, Danny and Sterling Magnell were involved in a crash.

2nd day - 120 mile road race. The race ended in an up hill field sprint. I guess Freddie Rodriguez went then another guy who I don't know who and then a guy from BMC cycling team and Iggy went next. Well, if anyone knows little Iggy if he's there in the end after a long gruelling race, it's on. The boy has endurance and can sprint as an endurance rider. Oh, I almost forgot, HE WON YAAAYYYY. He beat Ben Jacques-Maynes (who just completed the Tour of California and trains with Levi) and Taylor Tolleson (rode for Slipstream last year and is now on BMC).

I'm so proud of him. What a race to win. Unfortunately I was un able to attend. It's O..K. because God was there watching over him. God is good all the time, all the time God is good. I have always promised God that we would glorify him and honor him and give him all of the credit first, 2nd, Iggy for all of the hard work that he puts into it.

Son, you are awesome and I'm so proud of you.

I want to tell you about the race. Ontario series of 5 races, February 22nd. This was a great team effort win for Rock Racing. Danny Finneran, Ian Moir, and Iggy Silva 111, started the train and did a great job in leading out the BIG BOYS Sterling Magnell, Raasahn Bahati, and Justin Williams, for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for the Pros. Raasahn got 1st, Sterling 2nd, and Justin Williams 3rd place. Great team effort and great team win. Great Job guys.

I just want to tell you that you got me impress with the way you race on red trolley !!! You and your dad have been one of the examples when "Son and Father combine their powers" you have your dads support and thats very important that someone of your family member support you. i will love if my dad at least try's to be there in red troley to see my first race ,since i stop racing 4 years ago. but thats life, not every body has that aportunity like you. keep doing like dad iggy you have all my support. i know that i have never written an email to you ,BUT i just wanna say this few words to you.

Red Trolley Classic

Once again, I would first like to thank God for keeping everyone safe yesterday in what was an incredible race. Then I would like to thank Sean Burke for comping Iggy's race. Without people like that helping us, we would have not been able to race these last two days. Now for the race report:

WOW! so many riders and spectators. From grandparents to parents to kids and even kids in strollers. It was awesome. There must have been at least 200 riders in the pro field. Our good friends from Jelly Belly, Successful Living, Rock Racing and many other teams, and lots of friends. Since this is Iggy's blog I will mainly speak of how he did and what I saw. Boy, I am so proud of my son. Iggy was in the front a lot working and chasing. Just remember he's only 18 years of age and is out there with the BIG Boys, and doing very well. It was a fast race. The end came down to the wire where Jelly Belly had their train going and Iggy right behind them. Rhasahn Bahati and Justin Williams on Iggy's wheel. Iggy started the lead out for Justin and then jumped back in. Justin took the win. Our good friend Brad Huff got 2nd. A few others in between and Little Iggy finished 10th. He made a big impact on a lot of people after Saturday's race while being right in the mix of things till a broken chain took him out. I think what people were saying is that what mental toughness he has to stick it out during the snow and the rain. Then coming out yesterday and being in front a lot during the race. Steve Hegg said to me "what is your son doing up in front"? I then replied, "Getting you to notice him." Steve then replied, "You can't help but notice him." What a compliment coming from our good friend Steve Hegg, 1984 Gold Olympic winner. So many people are starting to notice little Iggy and it makes me very proud. What makes me even prouder is that people not only notice his riding skills, but also a well mannered and nice kid. That goes along ways just ask Neil Shirley. You can be competitive, but if everyone likes you because you are nice, you can go a lot further in the cycling world, and in life period. Thanks everyone for being so kind to us. It makes me proud to know you and to be treated with respect. I have always taught Iggy to be respectful and kind to everyone because it will take him far. Thanks for reading this if you do. Kids are awesome. God bless you for checking Iggy's blog and cheering us on. Randall, it was great seeing you there. Love you all.

Rain or Shine but Snow?

Yes, it's true, it was snowing at the Boulevard race on Saturday February 7th. It was awesome but of course I'm not the one on the bike. It sure was good to see all of our good friends again. Danny Van Haute and his Jelly Belly team with Bradd Huff. Matt the big Australian, my good friend Steve Hegg, '84 Gold Olympic winner who I bragg about all the time. And of course, our good friend Dr. Brent Kay and his Ouch team. Has anyone seen Floyd lately? He looks awesome and he has the Opie Taylor face of a Kid. It's a compliment. Floyd is such a nice guy. Iggy was saying that Floyd could have shreded the field if he had wanted to. He was talking the whole time and I think he was even eating pizza during the race. Iggy did great and was in the top 18 until 10 miles to go when he snapped his chain. Does that boy have torque or what? I'd better quit feeding him carne asada burritos. I think it's just his daddy's cooking. Iggy did awesome . He doesn't like to talk about himself nor does he ever make excuses. He was upset because he was there and made a big impression with all the "big boys" or should I say "big guns". One thing about Iggy, he's never satisfied and that's a good thing because it keeps him hungry. Son, you are awesome and I'm so proud of you. Keep up the good work and always be respectful to all of your friends in the cycling world. Just remember, no one is bigger than the sport of cycling, and it's always great to have friends and people liking you. Being a good rider and a nice guy goes along ways.

God, thank you so much for keeping everyone safe in the race yesterday. Also, UCSD thanks all so much for helping little Iggy. It was fun and you guys did a great race.

Bikesport Radio Debuts in Southern California on Monday, January 26 - Bikesport Radio is a news and talk show that will play on Los Angeles Free Radio and initially be a bi-weekly program. The show is new for SoCal and has the goal of helping cycling gain more media exposure. Bikesport Radio will report on the weekends' race results and hopes to have guests in the studio. The show will be at noon on alternate Mondays and beginning on January 26th, Junior National Champion Iggy Silva will be in the studio. Juniors are the future of our sport, and your calls are welcome to talk with Iggy.

The inventor of Geolung, a new breathing device that can be used to filter out contaminated air during commuting or off-road riding, strengthen the lungs, or even to simulate altitude training depending on which filter is installed will also be in the studio.

And I am honored to carry the torch through the next phase of Iggy's career. Ted, you did an awesome job creating and maintaining this blog! I will post with great respect for what you started.

So I hear people love to see photos, look out Iggy fans, photos you will have. I will be going to as many of Iggy's races as I can, the first one is at the LA Velodrome on the 24th.

Who am I, you wonder? Well, I am a huge cycling fan and a recreational rider (5000+ miles per year). I am an amateur photographer with a big dream to make it a profession. How lucky am I to be able to combine my two biggest passions in life? And the icing on the cake is the fact that my love for what I do can now benefit the Iggys. What a wonderful feeling.

I met the Iggys at the Dana Point Grand Prix on June 1, 2008. I had my telephoto lens pointed at the start of the Pro 1&2 race. Daddy Iggy walked right up to me and said "See that kid in the white jersey? Take a picture of him, he is my son. He is going to be a star." I had never seen a bike race in person, let alone photograph one. Having someone specific to focus on made all the difference and gave me a reason to be there. I ended up with some great shots (July 6, 2008 post).

Meeting the Iggy's has been a Godsend for me, this is going to be a really fun ride!

Here are some pix that were taken from someone in Mexicali. I do not know their name. The race promoter invited Iggy and Justin Williams to the race. Here are Iggy's results. The first day consisted of a 90 mile road race where Iggy finished 15th out of 100 riders plus. I forgot to mention this was a pro race. 2nd stage Iggy got 8th while climbing a brutal climb consisting of more than 14 miles from Mexicali to Tecate and an overal race of 80 plus miles. The 3rd stage he finished 5th while leading out Justin Williams for the win. Iggy's dad would like to thank the promoter for not only inviting our boys but for taking real good care of them. They had an incredible time. Thank you to the race promoter.

Well, not racing, but he was in attendance with some heavy hitters. What a great bunch of people. Eddie B, Doc Richburg, Adam, Wes, Javier, Kevin"The Thrilla" Schiller, Tona "Ton Loc" Rodriguez, and others. Of course Biggy all the way to the left. This is one fast crowd. I hope they like their nicknames. I am too old and too slow to ride away from any of these guys.

L' Abitibi Update

I did not want to have some alarming title for this post, so I chose one a bit more subtle. Iggy was in a crash about 300m from the finish and broke his collarbone. From what I understand, he was in second or third spot, when someone took out his front wheel. This info was not from Iggy, since he does not remember a thing due to a concussion. I am told it was a clean break. The US National Team coach said he is doing fine and is in good spirits. I could not find the results yet, but I believe his team mate went on to get first or second place which it great. I know Big Iggy is going to ask you all to say a prayer, so I will beat him to the punch. Let's hope he is back at it soon. I know he will be, this is one tough kid.

We would like to congratulate Gina "Alfred" Barbosa and James "Der Keiser" Keiser for their California State Championship titles. I am anxiously awaiting photos to post. Both worked very hard and are very deserving of their titles.

I went to USA Cycling and found this blurb that gave Iggy's results.

In the multi-event omnium competition on Wednesday, Iggy Silva (San Diego, Calif.) finished 14th overall. Competing in five events throughout the day, Silva began with a 17th-place finish in the 200-meter time trial with a mark of 12.568 seconds. Next, he placed 11th in the 5-kilometer scratch race, then 13th in the 2-kilometer individual pursuit with a time of 2:32.927. In the competition’s final two events, Silva placed 12th in the 15-kilometer points race with zero points and 14th in the kilometer time trial in 1:14.367.

I have been getting a lot of updates from my sources all over the globe. I am going to sift through the info and let you take what you want. I was at the track last night and really missed seeing Iggy out there. I have not seen the kid in person for some time. Got to speak with Kevin Schiller on the rail and it was great to see how happy he was for Iggy. He knew all about Iggy's whereabouts and progress. He told me it was just a couple of years ago that Iggy was some young kid at the track and now he is traveling all over the world. Kevin, in case you have not had the opportunity to meet him, is so humble and soooo fast. Class act. Speaking of class acts, Tim 'Sugar' Jackson, was at the track last night, as a spectator, of course. His recovery is going very well. His steel Masi track bike still looked ridable after the beating it took. I was happy to see Andrew Lee riding with the A's, great job Andrew.

Day 2
Kit and Iggy rode better today, better exchanges, good spirits.

Kit 8th in the miss+out, Iggy 7th in the scratch.

Guy and Austin 4th in the Madison stay at 9th overall.

Kit and Iggy now in 11th.

Iggy and Kit arrived in Italy by way of Belgium. Today they will be doing part of a 3 day u-23 race. I will keep you posted as I get info. I would also like you to check out Kit's photos online. Check back often, he updates them quite frequently. From the looks of the photos, I think razors are illegal or just very scarce over there.

On a more serious note, Tim Jackson, a.k.a Sugar, a.k.a. Masiguy was involved in a bike crash at the velodrome last night. I am sure he will cover the specifics on his blog as soon as he is out of the hospital and able to post again. I am sure Iggy ll will post a comment to this blog entry as soon as he reads it. He went to the hospital last night out of concern for Tim and has more of the specifics. All of our prayers are with Tim and his family and wish him a speedy recovery. I cannot stress enough, what a great guy Sugar is. He has been a friend to me in times of need and would give you the shirt off of his back. Please send him your well wishes. We love you Tim.
